Content missing in text files with notepad++ App-V

I sequenced Notepad++ in App-V 4.6 and when I installed this package in App-V client located machine, the application is not showing any content if I open any text files.
But default notepad is able to.

Any suggestions, how to troubleshoot App-V applications.

  • Hi,
I cannot comment any further on my answer, so I'll continue here.
It's irrelevent if the folder or file is part of the package, important is the isolation mode of the folder in which the file is physically located. Please check the isolation settings for the folder that contains the file.

Hi,
From which location are you opening the text files from? It could be that this location is "virtualised", i.e. the physical location is not visible from the bubble, and as Notepad++ creates an "empty" file with the name given if the file cannot be found... I suspect saving it it is stored in the bubble and when the app-v package is no longer active, the file "disappears"?

Cheers
Phil

  • Hi Phil,
The files are visible, but problem is when I open the text file in default notepad, it is showing the content. But when I open with virtualized Notepad++ then it is not showing content in it. - ur00361883 8 years ago
    • Hi,
when I mean "visible", I mean visible from the "bubble". The scenario you are describing sounds 100% like I have described in my answer. Please check the setting(s) for the location regarding virtualisation. Better still move a file to a location that you know for sure will not be virtualised, for example the desktop (is usually never virtualised).

      • Yeah, I understand.
FIrst of all, the text file I am pointing is not related to package, and its parent folder is not part of package. And moreover I created a text file with some random content on desktop and installed the pacakge. When I open the file, it is showing the same empty content - ur00361883 8 years ago

Taking a slight different tack, as a test, install a physical copy of Notepad++ on your test machine.
The retry the tests on your App-V'd Notepad++.

The thinking behind this is that if your virtual package is missing files/reg/something causing it to not render text - then the physical install will put those items onto the machine and the virtual package will utilise them and work correctly.

If this is the case, then there is something missing in your virtualised package that is required, and this confirms it.

If it's not the case, then you've potentailly ruled out anything missing,
I would do a snap of the install with your favourite lightweight snapshot tool to confirm that what you have in App-V matches what you have in a snapshot to verify this.

Open sequencer and goto Tools - click on expand package to local system.Give path to your virtualized .appv package.

This will de-virtualize the sequenced package to the local machine. Now open the file and see. If it is still the same, then something is missing when sequenced.(Not properly sequenced or missing files/registries)
