How to get the K1000 to pick up the Asset Tag from BIOS and list it under Hardware

I'm trying to figure out how to get the K1000 to pick up the Asset Tag in BIOS (not service tag) and list it under Hardware, just as the Service Tag or BIOS Serial Number is?  Is this possible?

We apply a physical asset tag sticker to each computer we have on our network.  I know you can create a custom inventory rule like ShellCommandNumberReturn (wmic SystemEnclosure get SMBIOSAssetTag) that will add that info under the software detail, but that's not what I'm looking for.  I do understand that the BIOS Serial Number is a great way to track this and also map the asset item to inventory item, but it's not what my boss wants.  I welcome any and all ideas and if you would like more info don't hesitate to ask......

  • I too want to know an answer to this one. My organization is talking very seriously about applying Asset tags to all of our IT equipment. - GeekSoldier 11 years ago
  • I'm pretty sure it's not possible without dell changing the code on their end - mr_jimmyjames 11 years ago

The only way possible at the moment would be to use a custom inventory rule.

To list it under hardware, you would have to vote on the feature request: http://kace.uservoice.com/forums/82699-k1000/suggestions/1571281-asset-tag-field-support-for-dell-bios

  • I figured as much, but I had the tiniest bit of hope that it was possible and I just wasn't seeing it. It seems like this should be an easy feature to add, as it seems they already use wmi for the other info under the "computer inventory item" detail. - mr_jimmyjames 11 years ago
