K2000 Netbooting

I have been trying to find a nice walkthrough to explain what needs to happen in order to get netboot working. Specifically, our K2000 is not on the same network as the clients we wish to boot to it. Has anybody set this up? What typically needs to happen?

  • Just spoke to the Kace Management and Developer Team. They do not fully support netbooting across subnets using iphelper. They also do NOT have it in the que for a future feature release. They believe that using an RSA on every vlan is adequate. The only way they will consider this important is based on votes. I found out we have to vote on things like this. I can't believe they consider booting outside of your imaging servers vlan as a "feature". Oh well, it's their rules, we just pay for them....

I would also read the following thread.  There is some extra information there you don't need, but there is also a discussion of getting around netboot subnet restrictions.  http://www.itninja.com/question/mac-imaging

  • If you just want a general overview, you can also search for netboot in the K2K admin guide. - philologist 11 years ago
  • If the KACE doc guys ever read this, it did take a significant amount of effort to track down this information. It would help if the documentation here was updated: http://www.kace.com/support/resources/kb/article/Mac-OS-X-Imaging-overview-and-troubleshooting, and especially if it pointed at the link above rather than just saying it exists somewhere on the support site. ; ) - philologist 11 years ago

You might create an Host (A) entry on your DNS if you haven't already. That's not everything that is necessary, of course.

Other considerations include enabling network booting on your client computer's BIOS, making sure DHCP is functioning correctly, and making sure your K2000 network settings are all correct. When I tried to set mine up the big issue was my DHCP was having problems; once that was fixed I was able to PXE boot. Hope that helps!

  • I'm pretty sure they are working with Macs and Netboot. It uses a similar theory, but works a bit differently than PXE for Windows clients. There is a limitation on Mac netboot that it only works on the local subnet, so you have to implement some workarounds, whether they choose to use IP helper addresses and some forwarding, or third party tools. It's a limitation of Netboot. - philologist 11 years ago
