The VMware Tools update fails to run after rebooting the virtual Kace 1000.

Hello ITNinja,

My IT department have asked me to update the Vmtools for my virtual K1000 appliance.
so i executed the upgrade by using the k1000 web appliance in the settings, appliance updates tab. this worked fine

when rebooted the k1000 virtual machine and the IT department says to me that the vmtools on the vitual K1000 is not starting from the vsphere Center.
i have browse on the vmware KB2015685 and i have found this subject:
Vmware tools init script is missing from the /etc/init.d directory on Linux Virtual machines
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2015685

Resolution:
The /etc/init directory contains the configuration files. The vmware-tools script is in the /etc/init/vmware-tools.conf file. The command overview is in init(8) and the syntax is described in init(5)

To work around this issue, you can manually start, stop, or restart VMware Tools with the commands:
  • /etc/vmware-tools/services.sh start
  • /etc/vmware-tools/services.sh stop
  • /etc/vmware-tools/services.sh restart

Note: You can also run the commands from the vmware-tools.conf file

To verify the status of VMware Tools, use the command:

status vmware-tools

but the problem we don't have the root password of the FreeBSD kace operating system.. to restart manually the service tools

is there any work around??
can anybody help me on this matter???
thanks
Richard

One would expect the service to start directly after a restart of BSD. If not there may be something potentially significant going on. This is something support can do without restarting your appliance. More than likely the best course of action will be to Submit a Service Request for KACE Support. https://support.software.dell.com/create-service-request. Support will likely get you what they call a tether key to grant temporary access to SSH for support.

If you're able to login to the WebUI navigate to http://k1000-url/adminui/settings_maintenance.php. Go to VMware and select guest and upgrade tools. Go back to appliance updates and select check for update. If that does not work call or submit your SR.
 Hope that helps
