WOL after 8.0

I'm testing K1000 system management appliance v8, and everything seems to check out OK except for wake on lan. From what I gather, it only works on the same subnet now. If you need to WOL across subnets you need to use a relay.

Does that relay agent need to reside on the same subnet as the machine being woken up? I've been going back and fourth with support on this, and he's saying it shouldn't matter which subnet it's on. However, it's not working for me. This is after adjusting router ACLs for directed broadcast to account for the agent sending the packets instead of the server. As a test I even set that ACL to permit any any on sending and receiving side. No dice. It works perfectly fine in version 7.2.

I need to be able to wake a machine on a subnet that doesn't already have a machine powered on. We trained everyone to power off their machines when they leave for the day, and we use a combo of timers (every AM), and WOL (for scheduled/emergency maintenance). I'm not confident I can get someone at all our locations to leave a machine powered on if we need them to. I preemptively opened a feature request to be able to do this once more, but I'm reaching out in the event it's an issue on my end I need to resolve somehow. Thanks in advance.

  • Could you confirm using Wireshark or something similar, if the K1 is sending the magic packet to that targeted device or not?

    Something like

    10.1.1.2 -- 10.10.21.101 -- WOL 144 MagicPacket for IntelCor_95:10:af(81:70:66:95:10:af)

Being 10.1.1.2 the K1 IP addresss - Channeler 6 years ago
    • It is sending a limited broadcast on the same network as the relay, but it doesn't send a directed broadcast to the actual network the end point lies on. - njc 6 years ago
  • i think i'm having a similar issue njc did you ever get this working? - terryj 6 years ago
    • No, it's working as intended according to Quest. I have a ticket open with them to argue my point. I'm hoping they'll come around and make the old system and the new relay system work in tandem. I don't like being forced to have a machine powered on 24/7 on a remote network just for WOL. - njc 6 years ago
      • Could you confirm if any other tool such as
        https://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/wake-on-lan-gui

Is able to wake that same machine.

You will have to use a Windows device on the same subnet-network as your KACE appliance.

See if that small tool is able to WOL that computer.
