How to create a KBE with custom drivers or tailored KBE

In some occasions you might encounter that drivers provided by Quest (KBE Driver Pack PE10 - Version AXX) are either not enough or not compatible with your devices. This can also be observed when deploying to other brands like HP, Lenovo or Samsung.

Prerequisites:

Get the Cab file or drivers from your vendor

Have the KACE Media Manager (latest that maches your SDA version)

ADK and WinPE Addon Pack, here

Dell

WinPE pack (https://www.dell.com/support/article/en-us/how17371/dell-command-deploy-winpe-driver-packs?lang=en)

HP

WinPE pack http://ftp.hp.com/pub/caps-softpaq/cmit/softpaq/WinPE10.html

Lenovo

NOTE: sadly Lenovo don't have (or I don't where to get it) a WinPE pack for several devices like Dell and HP does.

Microsoft

(how to extract the Microsoft drivers MSIs: msiexec /a c:\SurfacePro_Win10_15063_1704007_0.msi /qb targetdir=c:\surface )

Samsung (trusted provider)

Usually for Dell and HP machine, the WinPE pack listed before should be enough. If after using the WinPE pack you keep having driver issues fall back to the machine specific driver pack.

1. First Unzip the CAB file, I use 7zip (You might get a warning about the payload data, don’t worry just make sure the file size is the same):

2. Copy the chipset, storage and network driver to your Drivers KBE folder  (\\k2.ip\drivers\kbe_windows_x64/86):

3. If we are using a machine specific driver pack we ONLY need these three folders in there, and then reached all drivers from K2000 GUI, (Settings > Appliance Maintenance, Recache all drivers).

4. You are now ready to create a new KBE from the Media Manager, don't forget about having your ADK installed.

  • Anyone added PowerShell modules to a KBE before? Want to incorporate HPCMSL. HP provides instructions on how to build a generic WinPE WIM. So, i'm wondering if that's what I have to do and then use that "Upload custom WIM" button. Thanks in advance. - mcnaugha 2 years ago
