Anyone successfully capture MS Surface Pro image to KBOX 2000?
We've upgraded K2000 to 3.5 sp1 that has PXE support for tablet PC's running Windows 8. We are wanting to capture an image of the MS Surface Pro to KBOX - so far without success. We have updated the Pro with the latest firmware release for PXE boot, and are using the Microsoft USB network adapter ##1552 . We have uploaded the ADK for Win 8 to the KBOX. When booting to PXE, the Pro tries IPv4 then IPv6 and then boots to Windows. We have also created a bootable thumb drive using the ADK download from KBOX, but this doesn't work either. (All the files are extracted on the root of the thumb drive) If you have been able to do this, we would appreciate the steps taken. Thank you.

Currently the only supported method for UEFI booting is via USB. Copying the files to the root of the USB is not the correct process. You need to run the install.exe file in the package that is downloaded.

Have you used the drivers (for your KBE) located here?

You will also need the Surface Pro USB Adapter (only one supported apparently):

While I have not done so personally, these are necessary to PXE boot accrording to MS.
As stated in my question, we had *already* updated the Surface firmware which is required for PXE boot. We also used the required Microsoft USB network dongle. The full answer, in addition to doing this, it is necessary to download the KBE WinPE 4 Driver pack http://www.kace.com/support/resources/kb/article/kbe-driver-pack-boot-environments
and also download the Microsoft June2013SurfacePro.zip and add the Ethernet dongle driver contained in the update to the KBE by building a new KBE. So far, we were able to boot using the KBE from USB, then plug the Ethernet back in since there is only one USB port. We will test further to see if the surface will boot straight to KBOX without using USB KBE...or if PXE is feasible using a USB hub for both the dongle and USB KBE
I am now uploading the image, which looks like it will take several hours. We will test further to see if the surface will boot straight to KBOX without using a USB stick based KBE

Further findings; unable to boot direct to network using forced PXE boot, must use USB based KBE. Boot to USB via Surface Settings/General/Advanced Startup/Boot to Device. Found that a Belkin Hi-Speed 4 Port hub supports the dongle and the USB KBE drive, other USB hubs have not worked for booting, YMMV. The K-image took several hours, the WIM image seesm to be going much faster... - mlathrop 10 years ago

Was not able to pxe boot directly to kbox, however was able to use the USB KBE plugged into a Kensington dock along with the Microsoft usb/ethernet dongle. This is after I uploaded the dongle drivers to KBOX and redid my KBE. However, the KBE did not recognize the ethernet built in the dock, I probably didn't have the right drivers for that.

We have successfully captured Surface Pro WIM to K2000 using the Surface dongle and USB stick built from K2000 Win 8 KPE. We can only boot and connect to K2000 from the USB stick. When booting from the PXE dongle it fails both IPV4 and IPV6 and just boots into Windows. Doing some research it appears it is a problem with our PXE environment. Specifically we are using DHCP option 67 up until this point for K2000. However, this blog would lead to believe you MUST USE IP Helper table entry for UEFI devices in order for it to correctly find the PXE server. The question is does anyone at KACE know how to correctly configure the network for IP Helpers in order to PXE boot directly to the K2000?

This is specific to WDS but the principle seems it would apply. The USB stick is just an extra step but it would be nice to have some guidance on how to set up IP Helper vs DHCP option 67 to get our clients to connect to K2000. - HelpdeskCary 10 years ago
