Hi Srikanth,

with App-V (SoftGrid) No - IE is bundled to deep with the OS so you still need the Version 6/7/8 on the client OS.

Happy sequencing !

IE 6 and 7 (IE8) for that matter can be virtualized via ThinApp... Although as an FYI you need to run the virtual package for a while to "exercise" it and then do a SbMerge to capture some of the remaining pieces that weren't captured on the initial build... Such as security settings and RSS feeds etc...

You can sort of do it with App-V but the ThinApp product does do a better job of this. Here is the hack if you want to try it with App-V.

Hi,
I will try that out http://tredosoft.com/IE7_standalone .

When IE8 Beta was available I tryed to run them side by side with IE7.
My solution with App-V was to publish IE8 Beta via citrix with the App-VTerminalServer Client.
The TS was setup as a small virtual Server.

srikanthkhatri I'll look at the tredosoft solution again since it has been some time and see if I have any luck sequencing it. Also as vkleiner mentioned a terminal server environment is sometimes a suitable workaround for tough applications. If you want to cut down infrastructure requirements even further then host that server on a virtualization product such as hyper-v, virtual server, VMware etc...

Still working on this, rebuilding my lab with the production App-V code. I've also written an ITIL and MDOP exam last week plus work etc... Takes me a while to look at this stuff when I'm this busy.

On Win2K3 R2 with SG 4.5 I was able to sequence IE7 using this installer.

http://tredosoft.com/files/IE7s/IE7S-setup.exe

According to the developer of this hack the following features may not work.
  • Context menus (the one you see when you right click on an empty space).
  • The main menu bar.
  • Disabling popup blocker.
  • Feed reader.
  • Installing ActiveX components and ActiveX support. (not sure if this means you cannot sequence addins with the browser)
  • Showing combo-boxes
  • Web pages that require authentication.
  • Adding search providers via websites

I just heard that CSS has a solution for IE6 running on Windows 7 using App-V and will be announcing soon....
so I looked them up and decided to give them a call at 877.715.5448 and sure enough they do

we will be engaging CSS to help us with their App-V solution as Microsoft does not support IE6 on windows 7 using App-V

What is CSS? I can't find on Google. Did you get any clue how they do it? Did they un-install IE6 from Windows 7/XP before starting sequencing? If yes, how?

HI Guys,

Have you read the limitations of APP-V.Becasue we can't sequnce IE and also we can't create MSI package also.Becasue it is core application which come OS.If you try to sequnce also it will not work fully. Please check in any website.

Thanks,

I've done some research and the IE6 using App-V solution is a bit more tricky than simple sequencing. There is a keep API level incompatibility between IE6 and Windows 7 that makes this solution a little more tricky. CSS security has a solution but the licensing is fairly expensive, still buying ThinApp or any other application virtualization solution to solve this situation is going to be expensive. I traditionally try to push scenarios like this into the terminal server world but depending on how big your terminal server environment is and how much you may have to expand capacity this may be prohibitively expensive as well.

I'm still trying to see if I can find an easy way (i.e. not write custom code) to fix this problem with App-V but I am making no promises yet.

I was under the impression that Microsoft had recommended NOT to sequence IE since is tied so deep into the OS itself...

The best way to do it would definitely be VMware ThinApp. Check out the following post which document how to do it:
VMware ThinAPP Virtualizing IE6

I recommend as well you check out the second video in the post, as it show IE6/7/8 all running at the same time on Windows 7 using VMware ThinApp.

It is not condoned by Microsoft to sequence or virtualize for that matter any version of Internet Explorer. However in my travels I have found this but I luckily have not had a customer yet that has had to resort to something like this.

Also if you are test driving options I would say look at this as well so browser compatibility does not force your application virtualization decision.

Why not create a GPO in SCCM and let deploy as an update? You can control who gets it or all.
Rating comments in this legacy AppDeploy message board thread won't reorder them,
so that the conversation will remain readable.
