Can Kace easily detect Windows 8 style applications?

I'm trying to detect if people have particular Windows 8 style apps install on their devices.  Kace does not seem to pick them up as installed applications.  I know I can add a custom inventory rule but Kace seems to be rather inconsistent at detecting the registry keys I've put in.  (i.e. I have a particular app installed on a computer and the registry entry exists but it is still not appearing in the software titles list.)  Does anyone have a tried and tested way that they are using to detect them?

What version of K1 you have?

K1 5.5 has support for detecting Win 8 style apps.

  • We have v5.5.90547. I just installed a game called 2048 from the app store, forced an update and checked under installed apps under the machine's listing in the inventory. I can't see it there with the exception of through a registry entry I have made a custom inventory rule for. Is that where you can see it? Am I missing something? - DarthTanion 10 years ago
    • All the programs under "Installed Programs" section of the inventory are listed from Add/Remove Programs of Control Panel in Windows. Since Windows Store Apps are not listed there, you won't see them under "installed programs" section

However, with the new Software inventory feature in 5.5, we discover Windows store apps along with several other applications which are not listed under Add/Remove Programs. These are listed in "Discovered Software" section in inventory page.

If you don't find your application here, it means that particular app hasn't been cataloged by Dell yet. You should still be able to locate that windows store app from Inventory->Software Catalog->uncataloged Tab, with regular search

You may also submit a catalog request to Dell from the same page to get that app cataloged - AbhayR 10 years ago

...just an FYI on detecting software registry keys. Since the agent is a 32-bit app it will look at 32-bit keys. For ex, if you're looking for:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\11.0

You will want to append 64 to specify the 64-bit location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE64\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\11.0

otherwise the agent will look for:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\11.0

  • Thanks for that. If I can't figure out how to get Kace to just see the apps normally I'll look into this. - DarthTanion 10 years ago
