Deploy Custom Icon Associated With Web Link
I need to just drop a custom icon on the desktop that points to a web link. This really is a desktop shortcut that is associated to a web link.
Nothing fancy, but I have questions on the best way to do it. I can’t see scripting an entire MSI package to do this.
Suggestions?

You could put it all in a URL file
Create a file with an extension of .URL and populate with something resembling the following.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://www.google.co.uk/
IconIndex=220
IconFile=C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHELL32.dll
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Works well as will launch the default browser on a machine whereas some other methods pass the URL as a parameter to a specific browser .exe.
