Deploying Desktop Shortcuts

I am trying to deploy a desktop shortcut to clients but am having trouble. The desktop shortcut is a shortcut to a shared network folder on a different server. I tried using the Desktop Shortcut Wizard but the shortcut that was created does not go anywhere or do anything when I double-click it.

To the User or to the Public Desktop? Kind of significant...

Have you tried using a GPO? I always use GPO's to create shortcuts and links to the desktop and to favorites in IE if needed.

Here are two alternatives to the wizard which users have found successful in the past:
1. http://www.itninja.com/question/creating-desktop-shortcuts-with-custom-icons

I've only deployed shortcuts for local programs, not network locations, so I don't know if there's some subtlety I'm missing.

Create the shortcut on a test machine. Then create a .bat file. In the .bat file use the command line below. ZIP up the files, and upload them to a software record. Create you managed install for the machines that need it, and deploy.

copy /y "shortcut.lnk" "%public%\desktop"
