detex.exe consuming high CPU

We just starting seeing alerts on several servers that show detex.exe consuming high amounts of CPU.  Is anyone else experiencing this or know what detex.exe is responsible for?

C:\ProgramData\quest\kace\modules\detex\detex.exe

For anyone else that might run across this - removing and reinstalling our antivirus (Cylance) seems to have resolved this on the handful of machines experiencing it.  My best guess is that there was some weirdness left after a Cylance update or policy change, and the fresh start resolves it.

So far so good after one day, no sustained high CPU for detex.  Looks very likely to be some interference with the antivirus, but not sure what.  It isn't raising any issues in the antivirus logs and I had full exclusions for it anyway...

Further follow up - weekend has come and gone with no sustained high cpu for detex when running the test box without antivirus.  Now to figure out what the AV is doing that is still getting tangled with detex...

After reinstalling the antivirus 4 days ago, still no high CPU from detex so I am back at square one.  Maybe it has to do with having upgraded the antivirus in place from an earlier version, and the clean install doesn't have the same problem...

What version of SMA and Agent?

C:\ProgramData\quest\kace\modules\detex\detex.exe is used by the KACE Agent.

What task was running at the time? ... KACE patching?

SMA 12.0.149 and the Agent was 12.0.38.  Nothing (no patching, inventory or scripts) seemed to be running at the time but detex.exe never released the resources.

I restarted the process and it did not spike back up after that.  It happened on a number of servers so i'm curious why and what's causing it.  Quest support asked us to ensure that all AV exclusions were in place but that has always been in place.

Wondering if anyone ever found a true resolution to this?

@wmichel23 I know I have not.  I am on SMA 13.0.383 with agent 13.0.42 now and the issues have never gone away for me.  It is super intermittent and doesn't seem to affect all systems.  I still think it has to do with our Cylance Antivirus, probably the advanced memory protection and/or script blocking features.

  • Most likely. I'll let you know if I'm able to figure it out. - wmichel23 1 year ago

I am having the same issue.  detex.exe staying at very high CPU usage when nothing else was happening on the system.  Closing the process and letting the agent restart it calms it down for a while, but by the next day it has gone up again.

SMA 12.1.168, agent 12.1.52

We use CylancePROTECT for our AV, and AV exclusions aren't helping me either. I will try uninstalling Cylance on a test system and report back tomorrow if that changes anything.
