Discrepancies between Smart Labels, Device Inventory and Managed Install targets

I would like a little clarification on the behavior I am seeing when dealing with Smart Labels, Managed Installs and Devices. I am running some tests to try to pinpoint some issues and I am trying to figure out if this is the expected behavior.

I will give some of the details of my current testing environment below:

Smart Label
Name = DL - TEST - Java - 8u31
Software Titles does not contain Java 8 Update 31 AND
System Name = TestMachineName

Managed Install
Labels = DL - TEST - Java - 8u31

After running an inventory on the Test machine, the device shows up under the Label Management computer dropdown and the Managed Install properly shows up under the Managed Installs dropdown. However, if I go to the Manahed Install, the Managed Install Tasks section still shows up empty. If I then go to that devices inventory and go under Labels, the DL - TEST - Java - 8u31 Label is missing.

The device meets all Label requirements, shows up under the Label in Label Management, and has had an inventory ran but is still not properly having the Manage Install deployed or having the Label properly registered. I am trying to figure out why I am seeing this behavior, and I believe I am seeing the reverse as well. Where devices are not being properly removed from Labels after an inventory even though they no longer meet the requirements of that label. They might not be listed under the label in Label Management, but are still registering as part of the label under it's inventory and in Managed Installs. In some of these scenarios I am seeing Managed Installs installed multiple times because of the delay for the Labels to properly be registered.

What am I missing here?

EDIT: I have given it some time to settle and ran an inventory a few more times on this machine, but it is still not registering under the Managed Install. The Label now shows under the device's inventory, but not under the Managed Install.

Is the operating system of the the test machine selected as a supported operating system in the software inventory of the software you are trying to deploy? If so, does the Managed Install work if you add the machine to it directly instead of the smart label?

    This is so completely broken. This is a Software I have never deployed before. I just chose this version of Java because I have not installed it before. I normally have used CIRs to install my software, but that was becoming too big of a headache to maintain when dealing with the different architectures and 32bit client on 64bit machine. I thought if it was an auto detected piece of Software it would default to all OS being selected, but I guess I was wrong.

    My biggest worry with this is I have noticed with my CIR that sometimes my Targeted OSes have some Versions that get unchecked on their own. I know they aren't new, as sometimes it will be a version of Windows 7 or something that I know was selected when i created the CIR. This Software only had 1 OS checked. If a Software has a version of an OS go briefly without having the software installed does it remove that OS entirely from the supported list? I am trying to figure out what is causing that behavior and that is the only thing I can possibly think of that might cause that behavior. It has been driving me crazy for a long time.

    I am guessing that the auto-populated list of OSes is going strictly by versions of the OS it has detected it as being installed on? This would explain why my list was only 1 OS on this particular version of Java. Does that also mean that if I go manually select all OS, and 6 months down the line one OS temporarily has no computers with that Software installed, it auto removes that OS from the Supported OS versions? This worries me as this is the only scenario I can think of that would cause the behavior I have been having.

    So this answers one question, but brings up another new one that is just as odd. - gerane 8 years ago
    • Oh, and at the same time, if another PC has this Software installed, does it's OS get auto added to the Supported OSes? That seems incredibly broken if that is the case. - gerane 8 years ago
    • I'm glad I could provide a solution. :) Personally I've had no issues with supported OSes as long as I manually selected them, but I suppose your mileage could vary. If that is a major concern for you than I recommend asking Dell Support about the issue to confirm the answers to your questions. - Ben M 8 years ago

      • Hmm, I'm sorry to hear that. I haven't had that problem before. I know that a few of the Dell People answer questions on this site. Maybe one of them would be willing to comment on these questions? Or on how to get Dell support to respond in those situations? :) - Ben M 8 years ago
      • Well, I think I have confirmed my fears. To test I added a device with the newest Windows Technical Preview and waited over the weekend to give it some time to settle. After coming in this morning and looking at the labels I had just set and we were discussing last week, I have 2 OS versions unchecked. One is the new technical preview that I was expecting, and the other is the major issue. Windows 7 Professional is now unchecked.

        The reason for this specific one is that I only have SP1 Windows 7 Professional devices in Kace currently. This is very problematic for me, as I will eventually have more non SP1 devices added to my network. I have other scenarios that this is very problematic for me as well, more so than this example. This is a very major problem for me. I just cannot understand why they implemented it in such a broken manner. - gerane 8 years ago
