forcing the installation of a feature
Hi,
At my work we use GPO to distribute MSI files (advertised), but I keep running into the same problem when an app has more than 1 shortcut.
Wise makes a feature for every single shortcut, but How can I force it that if 1 shortcut is clicked that EVERYTHING is being installed. Little example.
I have an MSI file with a feature "Complete" which has 2 subfeatures "feature1" and "feature2"
feature1 holds the executable and a shortcut for it, and feature2 holds the .hlp and .cnt file (1 component) and the shortcut to that .hlp file. and the parent feature ("Complete") holds all the other files
Now I tryed lots of settings for the features, but if I distribute it to a machine, and the user clicks the shortcut to the executable, only the components in feature1 and Complete are being installed, and feature2 is not..
I want to be able to install all the features if I click a shortcut.. I know it should be possible, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Seems to me that setting the feature to "Always install this feature" should work just fine.. But it doesn't :(
Any help or idea's would be very welcome

Well i need to ask you few questions to clarify it.
1) Are you packaging the MSI's in your workplace and distributing them?
2) If yes, can you tell me the tool which you are using to package it?
I work on Installshield Developer. There is an option in the Organization tab called Features. Select the feature which is not installing and in its properties set the Required property to yes. This will solve the problem.

I'm doing everything with Wise Package Studio 3.2 Professional.
An old version but management doesn't want to buy a newer version yet..
The problem is that the "required feature" tag is ON..
Looking at the documentation and with a little logic thinking this should make sure that the feature is installed...
But it's not :(
I'm distributing them to the clients, using GPO and Active Directory on a win2000 server with winXP clients.

Then try using the property ADDLOCAL=ALL. Add this property as a command line parameter or include it to the Property Table.
i think this will do it.

The short-cut behavioris a known bug in the older versions of Wise an has been resolved to the present product. this behavior is common on re-packaging applications which is most likely the problem with your installation. The anomaly would allow the creation of components with invalid or missing component keys when the msi installation was built directly from a setup capture.
I am the Technical Lead for the North American Script Development Lab for Royal Dutch Shell. We are exclusively a Wise Shop and also distribute via GPO to a full Windows 2K AD environment.

But, if it's a Wise issue it should be possible to edit the problem in the tables. right?
Either with Wise or with Orca or something....
But where 'is' the problem :)
I solved it btw by putting the helpfile in the 'complete' feature..
Not a pretty fix, but at least it works.. [:-]
