Having trouble removing modern apps from Windows 10 using Kace K1000

I have been trying to get Kace k1000 to update our Windows 10 machines to version 1703. I know this isn't the latest build but it's the latest one that works with our applications. I have a managed install that performs in place upgrades without having to reimage the machines or having to have anyone logged on to the machine. The problem is xbox and all the other naughty apps we don't want are installed with the update. I figured out how to remove them from all users but so far it requires me to login to each machine and run a batch file from an administrator command prompt. Needless to say I would like to have Kace do this for me. Below is the latest script I have in Kace, It's pretty much my bat file just entered into Kace scripting module. Below the screen shot of the script is the output window. Does anyone have any ideas for how I can get kace to remove these apps?

You will need to use a Powershell script, and set it up as the Method 2 described here:
https://support.quest.com/kace-systems-management-appliance/kb/138389/powershell-script-from-the-k1000

Don't forget that when you are running the BAT file, you are doing it as a user account with admin rights, KACE by default runs as SYSTEM, you may need more permissions to perform such actions as remvoing Apps from Windows.

Comments:
  • Thank you I will try that and I am using an admin account as opposed to allowing it to run as system. I'll let you know how it goes. - kallun 5 years ago
  • Is there a way for me to post attachments? I tried Method 1 from the link you posted and it's still not working. Nothing is uninstalled and I am using admin crdentials - kallun 5 years ago
    • I said Method #2,

You may want to use pastebin or imgur links to post text or screeshot - Channeler 5 years ago
      • I tried method 2 and I am still having problems with it not wanting to run. Kace reports it ran the script successfully but the apps remain. I have a help ticket in on this. Thanks for the suggestions If I ever get this working I will post the answer so it may help others. - kallun 5 years ago

Best way to do it is to make your own wim file with all the modification you want.

You can install windows  on a VM make the modification and sysprep it.

Once done you create a wim file out of that drive, and replace the install.wim in the source folder of the win 10 iso with the wim file you created after sysprep. This will make sure you don't have to do anything after upgrading a machine specially if you have hundreds of them.

It will greatly reduce the risk of errors in removing provisioned apps on the fly during installation and you know what your image will look like every time you install it.

Another great tool that i found very useful was NTLite
Give NTLite a try, you can greatly customize wim files with NTLite.

Hope this addresses your situation.

Comments:
  • That would be the best method but...

Let's say you did that for 1709, and you have your golden image without non-business apps captured.

You deploy it... and a week after that, the machine gets the 1803 upgrade... I believe those apps might come back.... this is what the @kallun might be facing - Channeler 5 years ago
    • Yes, but instead of doing it on every image you can write the script to do it on every release.

I have a script that i worked out and when i want to change the source i run it on the vm that automates all the tasks that one would manually do, that includes removing unwanted provisioned app packages.

You only have to do it once, and after all you never know if by changing the source your previous script is going to work flawlessly.

In my case, i test the vm for changes and see if all settings have applied properly.

I am not saying this must be the case for all however it is still worth the effort.

Try this, it will get rid of most of the apps, i haven't done 1803 yet but the below was for 1709:

      • this is similar if not exactly what my script looks like. I'm trying to get Kace to run PowerShell and have it call a ps1 file with those parameters in there. - kallun 5 years ago
      • Hi there i'm starting to tackle this same thing for my Win10 Migration. My question is when i add a seperate poweshell script for each "remove"as a post install task it works as expected. When i try to add "all remove" list as you show above it doesn't work? I'm wondering if you have any other commands listed in your command script? - CMLou 5 years ago
  • Hi, what error are you getting? - PortZero 5 years ago
    • hey there, No error, completes the task as expected but not all apps removed.

I have the above list you provided in a .ps1 file that i upload to k2 and then the command is set to powershell.exe -nologo -executionpolicy bypass -noprofile -file ReduceAppCrapV2.ps1

For instance when i search for OneNote its not there but the the Windows Store is? - CMLou 5 years ago
    • another thing i just noted is that the application that did get removed are added back when a domain user logs in for first time... - CMLou 5 years ago
      • The only reason i can think of is that you are doing it on a scripted install and that doesn't always work well.

you can only remove these apps if the app is uninstalled from all users including the builtin administrator. Once you have it uninstalled you shouldn't have any problems removing the packages.

All these are located in C:\windows\windowsapps

I personally didn't removed the store app, it can be blocked by group policy on enterprise edition of windows.

If you need to do a scripted install i would suggest you either remove these apps by using ntlite or create a vm and remove the apps in Audit mode.

Once you are done sysprep the c drive and create a wim file and replace the install.wim in the source CD with your c drive wim

        Hope this helps!

That way you don't have to worry about anyone getting these provisioned apps. - PortZero 5 years ago
    • Hi Port, for some reason i couldn't reply to your last comment to i'm replying here...

I'm interested in the replacement of the install.wim file steps as you suggested. Do you happen to have any "step by step" instruction or point me in the direction? I have downloaded the NTlite too and am going to start playing around :) - CMLou 5 years ago
      • Hi CMLou,

Here is a very detail guide from microsoft to service the install.wim

        https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/system-builder-deployment-of-windows-10-for-desktop-editions

This process is very simple when NTLite, as it mounts it for you and you can enable and disable windows features and apps and you can add drivers and updates if you need to and it does all these with a simple clicks.

Another way is to create a Virtual machine and install windows 10 and boot it into Audit mode(https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/boot-windows-to-audit-mode-or-oobe) and configure it exactly how you would want it for your fleet and create a sysprep image(https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/sysprep--generalize--a-windows-installation)

You can then use GimageX(https://www.autoitconsulting.com/site/software/gimagex/) to capture the C drive and create a wim file.

You can replace the install.wim in windows10 install file which is in Sources folder with the wim file created with GimageX.

Now when you install from this source, it will have all the customization you made on the VM.

Different people do it their own way, the main point is if you understand the process and steps involved.

Hope it helps! - PortZero 5 years ago
      • Hi Port, I appreciate the ALL the info you've provided. I'm making progress but still hitting a few snags. I'll review the docs you sent and keep on chipping away :)

Thanks again!! - CMLou 5 years ago
      • Hi Port...I wanted to give you an update and a shout out for helping me out throughout this process.

I was able to utilize NTLite and the Docs you provided to do the exact steps you outlined below. I now have a fully deploy-able Custom Win10 image without all the bloatware. Now on to figure out USMT and see if that will help with my migration from 7 to 10.

Thank again!! - CMLou 5 years ago
  • Hi CMLou,

Great to hear that it worked for you, here is a very good project that i came across and it works really well. https://github.com/nickrod518/Migrate-WindowsUserProfile

In my case i modified it to my needs however you can use it as is if you want.

Good luck! - PortZero 5 years ago
