How many machines can you image at a time?

Hi all,

We currently deploy a WIM image to our labs (Win 7 Enterprise with a little customization) and follow this with approximately 130 apps afterwards.  Once the image has deployed and the 'Copy Post Install Files' task has completed, we start the next batch.  We use RSAs running Linux with dual NICs.

Problem - we can only deploy to batches of 6 machines at a time.  If we start anymore (a 7th machine) that extra machine stops (fails) and the original 6 slow down.  How many should we be expecting to deploy at a time?  We use RSAs as we have several offices in regional areas and Security does not allow direct access to the K2 (we have no problem with that) but each RSA can only handle 6 machines at a time.  When you have 2000 to image that takes a loooong time (too long for my boss).

Is this deployment number OK or are we a bit slow (pun intended).  What do you guys get?

Many thanks
Tim

  • 6 at a time is definitely too slow, something is up with that. What is your infrastructure? Are you at least 100Mbps on all connections? Are you using any hubs? - nheyne 9 years ago
  • We are gigabit everywhere with numerous VLANs. I figured this was too slow but it was better than what we did with our old system (only just). As we are so compartmentalised here it is difficult to track a switch/router etc that may be slowing us down without another areas assistance. Do you think that may be the issue? The WIM and all software lives on the RSA. Is that not the optimal place? Do I need to store the WIM elsewhere as SMal suggests? How do you do that exactly? - hoodathunkut 9 years ago

  • I don't use WIM images so not an option for me but have you looked into using multicasting? Might help you out... - jegolf 9 years ago
    • nm...you are using RSAs. My bad. - jegolf 9 years ago
  • mmmm....multicasting (slober, slober) - hoodathunkut 9 years ago

Typically you can do 20-30 machines at a time.  I have improved that number to about 100-120 at a time by storing my wim files on windows shares external from the kbox and modifying the scripts to use those vs the built in.
