HOW TO: Darik’s Boot and Nuke in PXE
I was recently asked how to do this in one of my trainings, so here goes. DBAN is a bootable iso that allows admins to securly wipe hard drives. More info on the program and the iso can be found here: http://www.dban.org/. When everything’s said and done, you’ll be able to PXE boot a machine right into the DBAN iso and wipe!
The first thing that needs to be done is create a new KBE environment. The architecture doesn’t matter, but the name does. Call your new boot environment DBAN.
After the boot environment is created export the DBAN kbe under package management. Copy the XML and pkg file down to your desktop. This part is really important, go back to the k2000 and delete the DBAN KBE and the source media (in that order).
Now that everything is deleted, open up the7 zip file manager (http://www.7-zip.org/). This part is a little tricky too. You actually have to use the 7 zip file manager to look inside the pkg, don’t extract it. Keep dialing down till you get to payload, after payload click on files. Copy the name of your iso in the files folder. Once you have the name copied, you can delete the iso in the pkg file. Rename your DBAN iso to match the name and drag it into the 7zip window. Go ahead and close 7zip to commit the changes.
Ok almost done, move the pkg and the xml files back into the k2000’s restore directory and re-import. Once they’re back in, you should be able to boot into the DBAN boot environment.

When you say 'create a new KBE environment' are you meaning for someone to do this from the K2000 Media Manager, or just from the K2000 Web UI? Also, would there be similar steps if I would want to run a Windows utility (i.e. 'DiskWipe.exe' www.diskwipe.org) running under WinPE or is that a completely different animal?

The new KBE environment is created through the media manager.
Diskwipe.exe would be different because this is an application more than a bootable OS.

Instead of using Dban, I used the same steps and created an Ultimate Boot CD environment. It worked like a champ. The only thing missing is that I can't remote into the machine when it is in that boot environment, like you can with a regular KBE. Do you know of a way to add this functionality?

Maybe.
The remote controll is just a portable install of VNC set to autorun when the KBE starts.
If you can figure out a way to slipstream that into the Ulitmate Boot CD, Dairk,etc... it should work

David- I have attempted this with the DBAN CD, and while I can PXE boot and it does try to load it only loads partway. Judging by the point at which it stops it seems to be looking for a hard drive. Also I did the same routine on GPARTED and it doesn't not find any hard drive either.
What could I be missing here? Some sort of driver issue I assume?

thanks for the posting. DBAN works great. I have also experimented with UBCD and though I can get it to boot I get 7B stop error which indicated drivers for sata drives - I changed the bios back to legacy but same BSOD - I am just wondering if you had the same errors with your UBCD and if so what you did to overcome them.

Just an update on some more testing loading different .iso from Kace.
I have tried..
DBAN - successful
UBCD - Not successful - even with updated mass storage drivers - kept blue screening on boot
Bit Defender - successful boot but then hangs
Dr. Live Web - boots and has some functionality
Hiren's Boot Cd - boots and has some functionality
kaspersky Rescue Cd - boots but doesn't like life without a CD
Microsoft Security Scanner both 32 and 64 bit - works but crashes after launch - the product is still in beta so may work in the future.
Panda Safe Cd - didn't boot right and wanted CD
Trinity Boot Cd - didn't boot correctly - is looking for boot device, i.e
Avg boot CD - successful - works just fine
I find the idea of having all these tech tools available anywhere that I can boot a workstation valueable - the reality is not as promising though with only a few successes.
Perhaps others will have more success or have other ideas to make it work.

I just now used this method to PXE boot to Backup Exec System Recovery 2011 It boots just fine and seems to be functional but it is unable to find the network adapter - this may just be BESR though.
