I want to use a captured image to deploy to new systems without any OS. Can I do that? How?

Need to image 150 systems that are totally wiped.  Have imaged system with os and software loaded.  Normally, I have to have a OS on a system before it will image.  Would like to be able to include OS in image.  How do I accomplish that?

  • Not sure exactly what you mean, are you asking if a PC has to already have an OS before it will accept an image? The answer to that is no, it just needs the capability to boot to network or from some other external media, which would be controlled by the BIOS. - nheyne 10 years ago
  • you would pxe network boot to a temp env and then cast an image of the os you want to deploy using tools like (pay - kace 2000 or SCCM)(free - clonezilla)

You need to give some more details like the desired OS and what tools you have at your disposal to image with. - SMal.tmcc 10 years ago
    • For imaging SCCM is a bit exensive ;) but a better choice near it is to use ( and it's free ) MDT :) - fantomasss 10 years ago
  • I am using the Kace 2000 system. I know how to capture an image but I have not had good luck getting it to image a system that has no operating system on it. My image is of a Win 7 machine. - lmcginnis 10 years ago
    • It may be due to your partitioning, are you using the preinstall tasks to format the drive? How are the machines being wiped? - nheyne 10 years ago

you need to pxe boot to the os bit version you want to deploy and use.  You need to use preinstallation tasks to create the same number of partitions as the master. then format the drive and install the MBR.  if you are using wims do not deploy the mbr as preinstall deploy it as midlevel

  • It is best to create your master with a single partition. - SMal.tmcc 10 years ago
