Imaging & Scripting Scheme

Hi All,

Just wanted to know what scheme you are currently using for your scripting and imaging?

For example, currently I throw a base image onto a new model laptop/desktop using a generic scripted install. Once fully tweeked with just drivers and neccesary software, I then pull a full image as a base for that model. From there I can build pretty much any special(i.e. accounting dept.) image, SysPrep, and pull the new build.

I was wondering if anyone had an idea of a better, more efficient method?

Thanks,

A.C. McCoppin [8|]

That is exactly what we do. That is the best way I have found.

I just do a fully scripted install for everything, I load all my drivers into the kbox and away I go. For custom software, I use labels that get automatically populated based off of IP and Computername (like all my accountants are on the 10.1.10 segment and have a computer name that includes 200S). The labels are regex filters, it takes longer than an imaged install, but it is super clean, and most of my customers like it better as the machines seem more responsive.

We use VMware Workstation to create our reference image. By making judicious use of snapshots, we can roll back to any phase of the image creation process to update software, fix bugs, etc. It works great.

Our images include only free software deemed appropriate for every computer (Adobe Reader, 7-Zip, Flash, IE8, etc, etc). MS Office, the KBox agent, and antivirus is installed using a GuiRunOnce command during the sysprep mini-setup process. Everything else is a software distribution task on our Kbox 1000, targeted towards groups of machines. I don't use departmental images as they're too much trouble to maintain.

Using some sysprep and driver wizardry I've developed over the years with Altiris, this gives us a single Windows XP image to maintain for our entire fleet of Dell OptiPlex PCs and Lenovo ThinkPads. I'm going to begin developing a Windows 7 image next month that I hope will be just as effective.

I do a full scripted install, then tweak that to my liking, then upload a K-image. Once the Kimage is in there I can apply mose post install tasks to that if necessary, but the KBOX 1000 does most of the heavy lifting after image deployment.

same here... for the most part.

@sdickenson

Can you elaborate on your "driver wizardry" and Sysprep scripting? I would like to have one image similar to yours. We also are a Optiplex Lenovo shop.

The main problem I may have here is no 1000 series KBOX. This seems to be the common denominator for those of you with one main image.
