Internet Explorer 7 msi path problems

Hi there,
I'm trying to get IE7 distributed by Group Policy/MSI. I have plenty of expierence in this area, previously distributing 10 different packages or so to 120 XP clients. I have recently discovered the following: If my source msi in on my old file server running W2K SP4 Server, it works fine. As soon as a place these files on my new file server that is a W2K3 active/ passive cluster and create a GPO to distribute the msi, the client has an event log entry that tells me that it can't find the path of my packet. Obviously I have checked the Share/NTFS permissions, giving everyone full access (just for testing) and I have used the different methods of unc paths.
The old path was \\OLDFILESERVER\MSI$\Internet Explorer 7\*********.msi
With the new server I have tried: \\MYNEWSERVER\MSI$\Internet Explorer 7\*********.msi
and \\mynewserver.mydomain.com\msi$\internet explorer 7\**********.msi
btw: the event log id: is 102 (source not found)
Please help as it is getting frustrating.
Thanks!

Hi Chris,
this isn't exactly an internet explorer problem?
This looks to me as if there is a problem with the setup of the cluster.
Wouldn't do it like this. To use a cluster as package share brings only additional complexity to the task.

Thanks nheim,
let me explain the situation: I have just consolidated 4 servers into one A/P cluster. It seems to be quite normal to also put these software packets in a high availability environment. I do not have DFS running in my network so I can not use this option. How do you guys create a source for your binaries that is always available? It it possible to play with dns?
Example: I two servers called FSERVER1 and FSERVER2 with the ips 192.168.0.10 and 192.168.0.11. I load my packets on to these servers in to the share MSI$ Then I create a dns entry on my DCs: msisource.mydomain.com - 192.168.0.10 This means that the path to my msi packet in the GPO will look like this: \\msisource.mydomain.com\msi$\internetexplorer7.msi. If FSERVER1 is offline then I just need to change my dns entry to: msisource.mydomain.com - 192.168.0.11. Does anybody use this method?
Thanks in advance,
chrismk

Hi Chris,
i never ever would do it like this.
This would be a perfect task for DFS. I mean, what's hindering you to set it up? Everything you need is already on your machines.
GPO installations hardcode the source into the client's registry.
If you you have to switch those for whatever reason ever, you will be going to wish many times, you would have it done with DFS.
With DFS, this would be just switch over to the other source. No hassle, no reboot!
Believe me, this comes from own experience. :-(
And changing a DNS has latency. And in a MS AD integrated DNS a lot of records need to be updated. If something goes wrong, you get all kinds of side effects.
IMHO, a Cluster (w.o. DFS) isn't exactly the right place for hosting a lot of shares.
This is one of the reasons, why more and more organisations are putting their file shares to NAS'.

Hope, this gives you some ideas.
Regards, Nick
