Java 6 Update 24 - trouble disabling update

Is there a valid way, without using a .reg file or a script, to install Java 6 Update 24 with the update feature disabled?

In previous versions, I was able to use the JAVAUPDATE=0 switch to prevent jusched.exe from running in the system tray:
"jre-6u17-windows-i586.exe" /s /v "/qn AgreeToLicense=YES REBOOT=Suppress JAVAUPDATE=0 WEBSTARTICON=0"

This page at Oracle seems to suggest this is no longer a valid switch, though other pages from Oracle for earlier releases DO list the JAVAUPDATE switch.
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/silent-136552.html

I'm using the following command line:
jre-6u24-windows-i586-s.exe /s /v "/qn IEXPLORER=1 MOZILLA=1 REBOOT=Suppress JAVAUPDATE=0 WEBSTARTICON=0"

But the Update tab in the Java Control Panel is still enabled, and jusched.exe still appears in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Thoughts?

I'm having problems with this is as well. Sorry to say, but I'm a noob at doing this sort of thing. Would someone be wiling to post a step-by-step guide of how to do this?

Specifically for installing the 32bit version on a Windows 7 x64 build. Thanks!!!

what about modding the deployment.properties file in APPDATA...I believe theres options in there to do with Updates...
Rating comments in this legacy AppDeploy message board thread won't reorder them,
