K1000 will it be able to inventory the remote workstation?

K1000 will it be able to gather the inventory details of the workstation which are in different site? or it should be in same network?
Can we deploy a 3rd party software using K1000?
What if when we are trying to distribute a software in workstations which are in network and there is already the software is installed in the workstation, what will the k1000 do?

You may fiind these questions silly, but please answer these.

Thanks in advance :)

If your K1000 is accessible to the internet then yes machines will connect and upload data remotely. You can even run scripts, deploy software, patches, etc. when they are off site. If you have a large number of computers at a specific remote site then you can setup a Remote Site Appliance that will mirror some of the files locally to preserve bandwidth to that site.

Can we deploy a 3rd party software using K1000?
Yes, you can deploy 3rd party software using a managed installation. There are a lot of resources here on ITNinja to help with that. Check the software section for details on performing silent installs for many applications.

What if when we are trying to distribute a software in workstations which are in network and there is already the software is installed in the workstation, what will the k1000 do?
When you create a managed install it is tied to a title in the software database. If the K1000 detects the software on the computer it will not attempt to install it again. This makes it possible to target a group of computers to receive an application and the next time they update their inventory the K1000 will deploy the application if it is missing from the computer.

  • Thanks @chucksteel, just to confirm with the last question- What if when we are trying to distribute a software in workstations which are in network and there is already the software is installed in the workstation, what will the k1000 do? -----> If any of the workstation has a fake software installed already and we are deploying the same software which is geniune, will the k1000 skip the software deployment in that computer? - vishninja 7 years ago
    • The check in process updates the computer's software inventory (as well as other things) and then installs any managed installs that may be necessary, so it updates the inventory before attempting the install. If the title is present then it doesn't do anything.

I'm not sure what you mean by "fake software", but for Windows the K1000 detects installed programs based on the registry information and Add/Remove programs list. The database for software titles is version specific so the installer matches the software title exactly. If someone were by chance able to fake the installation of a program in the registry then the K1000 probably could not tell the difference. On MacOS the K1000 catalogs every .app on the system and their version number, so if you make a fake application with the correct matching information that would also trick the K1000, I guess.

If by fake you mean not licensed properly then that is more difficult to detect. You can create custom inventory rules that detect things like files and registry settings, so if you have a way to determine a fake software installation you could have the K1000 label those machines for intervention.

      • @Chucksteel Thank you so much for the information, and yes that answer my question. I have one more small clarification on K1000 configuration, i'm using the OVF format of k1000 in vmware so , the question is i'am facing difficulty in the initial device configuration, i have given the details below -

        1) K1000 dns hostname - k1000
        2) Auto generate web server name - enabled
        3) DHCP - Not enabled.
        4) static IP address - 192.168.132.158
        5) Domain - arabitpro.local
        6) Subnet mask - 255.255.255.0
        7) Default Gateway - 192.168.132.1
        8) Primary DNS - 192.168.132.136

        Rest all optional.

after entering the above details i have saved and it was success full.

when i try to open the admin web interface or when i'am trying to ping the k1000 static ip 192.168.132.158 from another machine which is in domain, it says the destination host is unreachable.

Please help me why the k1000 is not getting added to the domain?

My Domain Controller details is below :

        static IP: 192.168.132.136
        Gateway : 192.168.132.2
        Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
        DNS server : 127.0.0.1
        Domain Name : arabitpro.local

This is a very basic installation step, still i'am not able to get the expected outcome, please help. - vishninja 7 years ago
      • Our virtual server was setup by another group so I'm not as familiar with those settings. I would recommend contacting support. - chucksteel 7 years ago
    • @chucksteel, when you say "If your K1000 is accessible to the internet" (to run scripts, deploy patches, etc), do you mean simply opening port 443 in the org's perimeter firewall, or is there more to it than that?

Thanks! - kentwest 3 years ago
