KBE shows black screen on older Dell models

Noticed this yesterday; our newest KBEs built with ADK 10 b1607 or 1703 with either MediaManager or KBE Manipulator fail to boot on Optiplex 960s and 980s. They load via PXE, show the wim loading into memory, and thats it---then a black screen and nothing happens.

I know that last year around this time we were using a PE10-based KBE and it worked on all of our machines.

I've tried PXE booting as well as using a USB flash drive, but neither works. I've tried with and without the A03 driver pack as well. Has anyone had this issue with older hardware?

  • I played around with the BIOS settings and it seems like for some reason the SATA was set to RAID even though 99.9% of these systems only have one hard drive and 90% of those aren't configured for RAID anyway. I think I will consider this a solution as these machines are aging out anyway.

    If someone has a better solution please let me know.

    I've tried A03 and A04 driver packs, and with no driver packs, but the only thing to fix it was turning off RAID and setting to AHCI. - robcav 6 years ago
  • I have had issues with older models. I just keep an older Win7 KBE with the PE3 driver pack in the PXE list.

    You could also try to drop the network and hdd drivers in with the PE10 driver pack. I just havent messed with it because my old KBE works fine. - Desktop Jockey 6 years ago
    • Can you service (inject drivers) into a Win10 image with a PE3 KBE?

      I think I'll just advise to our techs that they disable RAID since its useless anyway. - robcav 6 years ago
  • Dell's come from the factory with RAID set. We switch them all to AHCI with a CCTK process.
    As for the Servicing of drivers... Are you asking if you can Image Windows 10 from a Win7 PE3 KBE?

    I do not have any issue imaging a device with Win 10 on our older devices from a Win 7 KBE - Desktop Jockey 6 years ago
    • Your CCTK process, when do you apply it? I'm assuming once you're in the KBE, but is it running as a pre-install task, post-install, or a custom command from a custom KBE?

      I'm having this exact problem with Dell E5570 machines, and switching from RAID to AHCI resolves the issue, but we're really trying to avoid having to touch 400+ units. - brandnewhistory 6 years ago
      • I set mine with a mid task. You can throw the CCTK files into a zip with a batch like this:
        @Echo Off
        cctk --embsataraid=ahci - Desktop Jockey 6 years ago
