Locating a machine on the network

I went to add a new machine to my network and I got a message that the IP is already in use. I checked my Inventory listing that shows all the machines with the Agent installed and I didn't see the IP there. I can ping the address though. Then I used ARP and was able to determine a MAC address. I used the IP and the MAC in the Advanced Search fields and it came back with nothing.

How can I find a machine on my network that doesn't have the Agent installed? Is there a way to identify the machine and/or determine a location for it?

  • Other thing if it is on a domain you can put \\The.IP.Of.Box\c$ in the run command of a machine logged in as an admin and look at the profiles to see what user is logged in or run a remote desktop and remote it to see its name. - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago

Sweet. We found it. It was a KVM switch. Thank you so much for your help. That worked great.

  • Here at the college we are so big the only way to chase stuff like that is at the switch level. Worst case they can disable the port and see who screams - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago
