Mac managed installs stopped working properly

Hello,
I am not positive but I think this issue stems from Yosemite and how the commands are being called from Kace to the Mac OS, maybe something changed from 10.9 to 10.10? These MIs all worked (mostly) flawlessly in Mavericks. Occasionally with Mavericks my Flash and Java MIs would fail and I would need to reset the "Maximum Attempts" number in the MI, save it, and force a inventory check on the Mac. After the second or third attempt it would install.

I'm now seeing all failures on the following MIs: Cisco AnyConnect, Lync, Flash, JDK, and sometimes MS 2016.

I'm using .pkg files and I've tried both with the default command and with a command similar to this, both fail:
sudo /usr/sbin/installer -pkg Microsoft_Office_2016_Installer.pkg -target /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD

Below is a section of the kagent.log file during inventory when the .pkg file is pushed to the Mac, also a screenshot of the downloads folder and the kagent.log being tailed. You can see the mount command failure. Based on this I can see when the install is failing, I just don't know why it's failing, and why the Chrome and Firefox MIs still work flawlessly everytime.

Kace server 6.3, latest 6.3 agent version. I've tested this on a Mac out of the box and imaged using AutoDMG/Deploystudio.

Has anybody experienced this or know what might be going on?

(This site doesn't handle pictures well I guess. The image shows the mount command failure part of the log files and the .pkg files which should be installing by themselves but just sit there and fail)

  • I also have varied success with Mac deployments. Some of them work better if I upload the package as a zip first. - chucksteel 8 years ago
    • I would try that but these were working mostly perfectly I think in Mavericks. I would rather figure out the root cause of why Mac MIs don't work as advertised. I'd rather not have to package each .pkg file in this way and use it as default as k1000 documentation says it should work.

Update on this case: I came in on Monday to this Mac as I left it. The packages were sitting there still in the Kace downloads folder. Each MI's 'Maximum Attempts' number was reached for this endpoint and 'not installed'. I reset the max attempt number on each of these failed MIs, forced an inventory, and each program installed as they should.

So bottom line is the initial inventory pushes the package and fails all install attempts. When I reset the max attempts and force inventory, the package installs. - bens401 8 years ago
  • Seems like whatever bug was going on was fixed in 6.4. I updated my server and agents to 6.4, reimaged a new Mac, and all my Managed Installs installed flawlessly. Go figure.... - bens401 8 years ago
