MSI order of deployment within a GPO via AD
This seems such a straight forward question, that i'm surprised I cant find a posting for it....
Does anyone know if there is a way to control which order msi's are deployed from a GPO via AD?
I assumed it was down to the order which you placed the msi within the GPO i.e. package 1 added as first package installs first, package 2 installs second etc..
We have a default software GPO that 'used' to deploy MSI's in an order i.e.
1. MS Office 2003
2. Adobe Reader
3. Macromedia Flash 8 etc
4. Functions 1
5. Functions 2
For some reason, the order of this deployment is now jumbled up e.g.
1. Functions 2
2. Adobe Reader
3. Functions 1
This creates a problem because Functions 1 and 2 need to be installed in their original order, I know I could create these msi's as individual policy's and control the deployment order that way, but I dont want to have to create a GPO for each teeny msi we deploy.
Any ideas would be helpful.

While things may have changed with Server 2003, I posed this question to the Microsoft GPMC team a couple of years back and was told that "unofficially" the items are installed in the order they are added to the GPO.

Vialli, I recall stumbling into 3rd party tools about a year ago that allowed you setting precedence of packages inside GPOs. I even think those were free tools.

Our GPOs had been installing MSI packages (Via Active Directory) in the order they had been added, until a few weeks ago when some started to throw their MSIs out in a seemingly random order [:@]. This can have quite a significant impact as many of our software GPOs have had MSI's added to correct faults in the original deployment, hence the need for them to deploy in a strict order.
What would be ideal is revizor's post....don't suppose you have any ideas where this tool came from? I've checked a few out e.g. GPO vault, but these don't appear to have a facility to control msi order. It should be noted that it doesn't have to be a freeware program, I just want something that does this one specific task.
