Project 2010 quirks

We have a user in our office who is experiencing an odd Project 2010 issue. Whenever he opens a schedule (created and saved in 2010 format), the boxes overlap each other and don't line up. When I open the same schedule on my machine (tested it on several other machines as well), the schedule looks totally correct, all the boxes line up with no overlap. The user has both 2010 and 2000 installed on his machine, and the same schedules that don't open correctly in Project 2010, open just fine in Project 2000. His version of 2010 is up to date, his machine has the latest Windows Updates installed on it, and I'm not sure where to go.

Why would Project 2010 be nearly unreadable with 2010 schedules? And why would they work fine in Project 2000?

    • Our fix for the original issue is going to be to give the user the laptop that is showing the schedules as they should be (and hopefully fix all the 1/1/84 errors). - disco510 9 years ago
  • Yes, the issue persists. I installed 2010 on the same exact model laptop and was able to open the schedules in question just fine - all the boxes were as they should be. Weird... Now, however, every date on the schedule is showing up as 1/1/84. The template being used is Microsoft Project 98 Upgrade Template. Any idea on how to change box templates on large quantities on schedules without having to work on each schedule individually? - disco510 9 years ago

  • what exactly is a project 98 upgrade template??? You might have to reach out to some project experts.... These guys do some good work http://www.programframework.com/. Changing a template in bulk is probably possible, but probably not using an API well known at itninja (I could be wrong). I will have to dig out Project and have a look. Depending on how the schedule task has been created, you should be able to go into the Project file and change the start and end date. - Badger 9 years ago

  • in proj 2010, go to the Project tab, then click Project Information, this dialogue allows you to set start and end dates for the project. NB, take care here.
    this is why I asked how the created the tasks.... if they have done it the 'right way' then changing the start and end dates, 'should' jiggle all the dates around.... so, proceed with caution. How many project files do you have??? - Badger 9 years ago

No - profile issue

Yes - try getting video drivers from the cards manufacture vs MS and see if that stops it.

Competing products is generally a bad idea. Do the working machines also have project 2000? All it takes is one shared dll to blow it up for one or the other.

The machines where the file appears properly; are they the same model of computer, running the same OS, drivers, etc. - are they identical?  If so, then it's that local machine with a problem and might just need new video card/driver update/reimage/replacement.  I agree that you should attempt to remove the 2000 version if there's no clear need for 15 year old software.

Thank you all for your suggestions! The problem persists and here's what I've done so far:

- Uninstalled and reinstalled 2010 - no effect
- Uninstalled both 2000 and 2010, rebooted, and installed 2010 by itself - no effect
- Installed 2000, tried opening schedules in 2010 - same effect as before

Schedules that are in 2010 format are still opening in 2010 and looking correct, and in 2010, boxes are still overlapping and out of alignment. Thoughts?

Try running a repair of Project 2010, or uninstall and reinstall. This should ensure that the DLLs get registered correctly. Check whether the machine has ever had any Office 2013 programs installed at any time in the past as this may have updated some shared DLLs with versions that Project 2010 does not like. Project 2000 may be working because it uses older DLL files with different names.  Having two versions of a Microsoft Office product on one machine is usually a bad idea as already mentioned, and if it's not a video driver issue, then a conflict between the two versions is the most likely cause.
