Pulling service tag info for Dell monitors attached to Dell PCs?

So we're starting to use our SMA for asset management, and I'm looking for a way for my SMA to pull the service tag info for each Dell monitor that we have plugged into a Dell computer.  Standard inventory just shows Generic PnP monitors for every device.  Has anyone devised a way to pull this via a script or otherwise?  In a perfect world, it'd display the monitor model, service tag (and / or express service code), size, inputs, warranty info, etc. but I'm pretty confident most of that will need to be entered in manually for each monitor (ugh).  I'm hoping someone smarter than I has come across this and conquered it.

  • We have started to use the Asset management in the way Hobbsy has described recently, but I'll love to be able to see the monitors attached to machines before this started. We have alot of leased equipment across the country and would be good to see who has equipment that is due back.

I installed Dell command Monitor onto my machine as a test but didn't get anything extra in KACE, I soon realised that apparently my 2018 Latitude 5480 doesnt support Command Monitor. If I put my service tag in it doesnt been come up as an option on the DELL support page :(

Its a shame as that would have been really handy. Unless I'm missing something. - rknight 3 years ago
    • It’s a shame that usually the shortfall in data flow is Dell related, in terms of if Dell made it available, KACE would be able to show it. That being said there are many way to connect monitors that do not show in the BIOS. I use USB for one of mine, so the moral of the story is “belt and braces” but there is no substitute for a robust Asset audit process, at least for today! - Hobbsy 3 years ago

You can use Dell Command Monitor (https://www.dell.com/support/article/de-de/sln311855/dell-command-monitor?lang=en)

Some requested data will be shown in device inventory

Monitor:Description: DELL xxx
Primary Status: OK
Serial Number: xxx
Manufacture Date: 2018 Week 42
Current Resolution: xxx

If you are adding monitor data into your Asset Management remit, that will mean assigning a label with the asset number onto each device. Dell monitors do also tend to have the serial number in a barcode format on the back of each monitor.

If you create an Asset type of Monitor with a field for the serial number as plain text, using our BarKode tool, you could apply the label, scan the label and create a fresh asset record, then scan the serial number into the serial number field and save. If you want you could also add in a field to capture the device the monitor is attached to. Owner, location and status of course come as standard and go without saying.

I've created a quick video to demonstrate, check it out on youtube here
