Restoring file on uninstall of software

I am packaging a software called Edit and Link by Nasdaq Inc which is an add-on utility for MS Word. This template gets loaded on the next launch of Word and provides the Addin toolbar. The concern is that on uninstall, normal.dot retains the template changes while the utility itself gets removed. This results in the toolbar still showing in MS Word post uninstall of Edit and Link. A simple solution is to create a copy of normal.dot pre install. When Edit/Link is uninstalled, the copy of the file can be restored. However, this does not account for any subsequent and unrelated changes to normal.dot, post Edit/Link install. If Edit/Link were uninstalled and the original normal.dot restored, any updates (to normal.dot) post install of Edit/Link would be lost.

My solution is to have two copies of the same normal.dot. One will contain the changes made from the Edit/Link install, the other one will not. Both however would be updated with any subsequent (and unrelated) changes. On uninstall of Edit/Link, the normal.dot file (without Edit/Link changes, but with subsequent changes to the file) would be restored. Problem is, I don’t know how to do this.

Any help is very much appreciated!
