Software Deployment 101

Is anyone able to provide me with a walkthrough of software package deployment. I am currently working on a project where I need to deploy a complex piece of software (SmartStation) to several of our clients. However, I have another project that I am working on internally to our staff, which is to deploy Lync 2013 and uninstall MS Messenger. Anyone able to share some insight and some documentation on this. I am new to the forum and new to scripted/unattended software installs outside of our patching schema.

Thanks in advance.

Oops. if this is becoming a daily activity, I would advice you to attend a "Repackaging"training or hire a Repackaging Consultant.

training:

I prefer Flexera's AdminStudio training.. very complete and now even with Certification!

Consultancy:  try PDS consultancy ( pds-site.com)

Ahh, good luck what that, software packaging is a skillset. I reckon you would be able to get away with the basic stuff, installing stuff silently, unistalling and some basic pakage configeration. But if it requires more indepth work, like your SmartStation software, you will need someone that packages. Have a look at the vendor software site, sometimes the provide information for ESD as its quite common now days. All the best. Riley

I've been at software deployment for almost a year now. Researching the forums here by software title can only get you so far. I second what jaybee96 said. Sometimes the CLI will only take you so far before it's better to repackage. What method are you going to use to deploy packages (GPO, SCCM, KACE, LANDesk, Altiris, etc)?

Comments:
  • We have a couple options to facilitate the deployment by using either N-Central or GPO. I guess the problem here is that I am a bit 'green' in the software deployment arena but if I can figure this out it will save my company and our clients $$$ as we can easily deploy there updates and software.

    - Thanks jaybee96, I am looking through flexera's site now. - jfriesen 11 years ago
    • They'll give you a 30-day fully functional evaluation copy. Be warned that they have a steep price per license. - GeekSoldier 11 years ago

Are you specfically asking about software packaging or software deployment?  If the latter then here are some good links that covers software deployment:
