So put simply if you are a ticket owner you will get the alerts of the box is ticked in the email ‘matrix’, the only way to stop this would be to disable all standard email alerts and build custom ticket rules for every alert you want, that way it could also be setup not to email those techs that do not want alerts.

I have had to do this.  Hobbs is of course correct.  several ways to go about it.  You can create several owner labels and if you search Ive posted a script which develops a email list based on label here somewhere.  Or, you could use a DL and simply use that DL to send the email to.  You could as a side not use an ldap label for owner assignment via AD.  Word of caution: if you copy the html for the email formulation from your built-in email config, be careful about the email variables.  Either build sql to create the variables with same name or replace the email variables with your own.
