Uninstall and install an updated version of VPN on clients using KACE

Hello All,

I need to uninstall a version of VPN, install a new version, and initiate a reboot. In order to initiate the uninstall I'll need to potentially end a process. I'm thinking I'll need to:

1. End the VPN Process 2. Uninstall the current version of VPN 3. Install the new version of VPN 4. Reboot the system

I may have users potentially connected, which is why I'll need to end the VPN process. Does anyone have any ideas what the best approach would be utilize KACE managed installations for this

use scripting and an OFFLINE script for that.
Why?
the clients may be connected over VPN and when the VPN service is ended the agent connection will break. This will also end any online task.

Depending of the VPN vendor the tasks are different. I suggest to ask the vendor for an update script which you tcan use in your KACE script.

HiĀ  Nico, thank you for your response. What we'd like to do is a managed installation with a notification that says "Your VPN client will now be upgraded. Please save your work" and have the install pause for 5 minutes and then initiate using the "Install Now" feature. However, we'll need to kill the process in order to do so. I was thinking of employing a batch file installation that would end the process, uninstall the previous version of VPN, install the new version, and force a restart. Is there a way to run an installation using multiple files (such as a batch file and an MSI) with a managed installation? we're targeting more of a "force the installation" approach. Thank you!

  • as I wrote:
MI cannot be used since the connection is disrupted and will fail due to this fact.
You can also bring up a message with Scripting (look into the wizard and you will find the user notify which does simply THAT)

If you have multiple files it will always be a bit more complex, it is working but you need to improvise here.
But again: this will not work since the VPN needs to be stopped and this will cause the FAILURE of the MI since the agent cannot access anymore. - Nico_K 3 years ago
