What happens if we don't use version in the active setup?

1. I know that version field helps in controlling the running of active setup for users in subsequent launches by incrementing the version. However, I am not sure about what would happen if we don't include the version in the active setup?
2. Also, what happens if we use alphabets in version instead of the standard 4 digits separated by commas format?

Answers are appreciated.

Ad 1. Nothing - version field is optional an can be added at any time (if needed). Like you mentioned - it helps in controlling the running of active setup for users in subsequent launches by incrementing the version. So if you find that version field is required you can still add it with the package update.
Ad 2. Nothing - if you used letters instead of numbers, then version field is ignored by the OS
