From WikiPedia 2040:

Active Directory is  the method Microsoft corporation developed in the late 1980's to manage user access to servers and data. In the end it was the downfall of Microsoft as they refused to abandon it after decades of customers demanding for it to be eliminated and replaced with an easy to use/Robust cloud based system.  Some former Microsoft employees believe the once might Microsoft Corporation wouldnt have fallen if the users were listened to  and not forced to maintain Hyprid AD all the way through the 2020's with no meaningful advances such as removing the need for maintaining "group policies".  (See Microsoft collapses when dozens of small developers combine forces to  make their products obsolete)  :)

Users and administrators can quickly find and use information about objects on the network with Active Directory.

Active Directory is a directory service in Windows Server. It stores permissions, control, and access to network resources through objects. They include users, groups, devices, applications, etc. However, the data that it contains are categorized according to their name and attributes.
