Seriously...no disrespect to you but what on God's green earth is your employer thinking of, letting somebody with such a staggering lack of understanding anywhere near packaging applications?

  • I totally agree with you there Ian.

However, we could probably come up with some constructive way of pointing Vino in the direction he needs.
    1) Get a wider knowledge of the Operating System and how they work. (I did a couple of years on the support departement 1st, 2nd and 3rd level)
    2) Read up and get familiar with Windows Installer. (VBScab would probably recommend Phil Wilson's "The Definitive Guide to Windows Installer"
    3) Get a course or some kind of training in the Tool you will be working with.
    4) Google is your friend. Whatever issue you have, someone had it before and probably posted about it somewhere on the Internet.
    5) Practice makes perfect. There are several different ways of attacking a problem. You will, after a couple of years packaging, find your preffered way of doing things. They might not always be "Best practice" but it will surely do the job.
    6) Experience! That's what you will be enjoying in the end. With experience comes the bucks. I've been working with packaging 4-5 years and consider myself on the verge of being experienced. But as it is with all things, with new products there are new obstacles to overcome. - andemats 11 years ago

What I'm guessing is that Vinodreddy10 wants to hear the key points from packaging guys instead of searching it in Google... and he is looking for information from packaging point of view..

  • I won't disagree with that, but in all fairness, when you ask about the meaning of DLL's and OCX's, your in over your head and need some basics before you even start thinking of packaging applications. - andemats 11 years ago
  • I partially agree with you :)
To start packaging from 0, (from dll and ocx point of view.) knowing .dll and .ocx files are critical files for the application functionality is enough I think..
You will come to know each and everything by experience..

Your packging tool is taking care of everything.. I would say, almost 60% work.. remaing that 40% packagers are taking care.. - jagadeish 11 years ago
  • >knowing .dll and .ocx files are critical files for the application functionality is enough
    >our packging tool is taking care of everything

These two statements are on the verge of being even scarier. - anonymous_9363 11 years ago
  • Yes jagadeish, you are right and taq for understand

AGAIN i'M SAYING DON'T GIVE UNNECESSARY SUGGESTIONS iF U WISH TO ANSWER DO THAT OR ELSE BETTER TO IGNORE MY QUESTIONS.

FOR UNNECESSARY ARGUEMENTS U HAVE SPENT AROUND 10 MINS OF TIME HERE ABOVE.
pLEASE AGAIN I'M REQUESTING YOU THAT I DO HAVE ALL THE KNOWLEDGE.
BUT, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW KEY POINTS IN THE PONIT OF PACKAGING K THAT'S ALL. - vinodreddy10 11 years ago
    • You caps lock is on. - dugullett 11 years ago
  • :)..
What I said is, almost 60% of work is taken care by the tool and packagers are taking care of the remaing 40% of work - jagadeish 11 years ago
  • Also, to start packaging from 0, (dll and ocx point of view) knowing .dll and .ocx files are critical files for the application functionality is enough

This is what I said.. - jagadeish 11 years ago
  • You are cutting down my statement and questioning as Lawyer.. :) - jagadeish 11 years ago

I'm sure you could find information regarding DLL and OCX by simply google it (or use your preffered search engine).

I'm not sure what you mean with "What I have to do if my application has dll and ocx". These files are probably vital for your application to work, so if you repackage your application, you need to incorporate them.

Note that some of these files needs registration, so be aware of any registry changes made by these during your snapshot.

In my opinion, Vinod needs to do some homework and google more stuff and READ a lot. Get a basic understanding of OS then tinker and see how dll and ocx and as well as other components like ODBC, services etc integrate with Windows Installer. There is no dearth of articles available on net.

Please don't be shy of googling.
