Windows Installer 4.5 & XP Pro SP2

At my place of employment, our desktops are all currently utilizing Windows ® Installer. V 3.01.4000.1823, on Windows XP SP2.

I'm just curious, how many of you have updated your desktops to utilize installer 4.5 on XP SP2? The reason we are looking at updating it is to gain the restart manager functionality. If you have upgraded, how did it go? Did you have any major problems?

We're looking at rolling out WI4.5 to XP machines next week. I hear that the update is not available with WSUS so I guess we're pushing it the old fashioned way.

The reason we are looking at updating it is to gain the restart manager functionality. To what end? I suspect most of us will be using some enterprise deployment system to push apps at workstations out of hours (SMS/SCCM) or during machine start-up/user log-in (GP), in which case they'll be no apps running which require restarting.

EDIT:
MSDN suggests that RM is in a Vista DLL so the point may be moot. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa373654%28VS.85%29.aspx

More often than not our deployments are during the business hours. We are finally finishing up implementing WOL for our desktops, so hopefully soon we will be able to wake and bake. We use SCCM for our distribution and have a deployment goal of 95% success within 1 business day, which usually means we push during business hours.

We're trying to reduce the number of reboots needed during update deployments during business hours, or at least make the process a little smoother. Granted, we've scripted a "Please close your app" script which gives the user 5 minutes to end each process, and kills it when the time is up, but if this functionality is built into a newer version of windows installer why not take advantage of it? Especially if it has the ability to restart the app after it has been closed.

This portion of the MSDN article describes the functionality that I'd like to see:

Restart Manager restarts registered applications after the installation. If the installation requires a system restart, Restart Manager restarts the registered application after the system restart.

And yes, from what I read, you cannot deploy WI 4.5 via software updates, it must be deployed as a package, which kind of sucks. Was hoping I could just approve it.

Just packaging it into SCCM now.
WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe /quiet /norestart

We're putting it out because sooner or later some vendor MSI is going to require it so I like to stay ahead of the curve. Better to get it out now during a maintenance window than in the middle of a week when we're panicking and requiring it right away to get some vendor patch out.

Sorry to open an old thread but have you tried installing this update (Windows Installer 4.5) on a Vista machine?
I have downloaded the file Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x86.msu and tried to run this with WUSA.exe..
C:\Windows\System32\Wusa.exe %cdir%\R1\Prereq\Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x86.msu /quiet /norestart
I could not figure out if its even running in quiet mode.. So i removed both the switches and it throws an error saying "The Update does not apply to your system"
Has anyone successfully used this .msu file and installed WI4.5 on vista? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
