WSUS 3 downloads super slow

08/20/2013 5354 views

Hello, we are using WSUS 3.2 on Windows server 2008 r2 x64 and in what seems like a fairly recent development, it is downloading updates extremely slowly. There is apx 4.5gb worth of stuff to download and it only downloads maybe 100-200mb per day. So right now we have something like 70 patches from the past couple weeks with the status of "files still need to be downloaded". I've seen that message on patches before but it usually goes away after a day or so (I wasn't paying attn to download rate before, but I am led to believe it was downloading in a somwhat timely manner if I was not seeing that message often). Anyway,

- There are no errors in the Application Event Log, so it's downloading properly just slowly
- In the BITS setting in gpedit.msc BITS is set to throttle DL speed to 20kb/s max from 8am-5pm but use unlimited bandwidth during all other times. For whatever reason it is NOT using more bandwidth during off times.
- I have tried a couple of commands to set BITS to foreground or whatever, but this had no effect.

Any ideas as to what may be causing the download speed to never run at more than ~20kb/s ??

  • Not sure if will help, but I've used a utility called WinBITS in the past - Google it, the Dev website appears to be no longer active, but many download sites have copies of it, SourceForge.net for example.

I had an issue a while ago with slow BITS downloads, and this tool is a GUI for BITS so you can see what's happening on your system.
I also found that it speed up the download whilst I had it open.

It may point you in the right direction.
