You can use ESX 5 for vmware or Oracle's Virtual Desktop. You could put on either a workstation or server. The main thing to be aware of is the amount of disk space. It should run with no issues  on the spec's you mention above.  If you use the Oracle VD then you may run into an issue if you are running Windows 7 because there is a limit on the number of concurrent connections which might force you to use a server OS.

When I was testing for a netboot work around I used a classroom image.  Dell 790 /w 2gig, Windows 7 x32 with vmware-player 3.14 installed on it.   I was only testing usually 1-2 units.  When it proved out a feasable solution we deployed to the main vmware server for 2 subnets and 2 old servers running hyper-v.  Just make sure you have enough HDD space.

One thing I would definitely recommend staying away from running a production RSA on the free VMWare Player.

  • I was told by a KACE support technician that VMware Player is unsupported for the RSA. ESX or VMware workstation can get the job done.
    • Yep, unsupported and unreliable. I've also had problems with Virtualbox for anyone else that might be thinking of going with that (also unsupported).
  • How does VMware workstation 9 stack up?
