product registration
Hi,
When i install the MSI for the first time,a product registration page asks if i need to register the product. Can anyone tell me how to remove the product registration option from the menu? I dont want any manual or auto updates.

- It's unlikely that the MSI is prompting for registration information. It's more likely to be the application itself. I suspect that the MSI is set to launch the application when the installation completes.
- If the registration *is* in the MSI, simply find the dialog sequence and set the previous dialog to bypass it.
- Removing the registration page "from the menu"? Do you mean from the application's menu? That's a question for the vendor, surely?
BTW, I imagine that this post will be moved to the correct forum 'Package Development' since it has nothing whatsoever to do with 'Windows Installer Errors'. Do try to use the correct forum for your posts.

Hi thanks for the reply.I am new to application packaging. So maybe i couldnt phrase the question properly. What i meant was that when i install the MSI for the first time and LAUNCH THE APPLICATION, a product registration dialog box asks me whether i want to register the product. One more thing I would like to mention is that its a silent install. So I dont think that i can remove the dialog box. There are two options in the menu, product registration and updates which are not required according to the standards that we follow and should be removed (in short, no manual or automatic updates). I hope I have phrased the question properly this time and you will be able to provide me with the necessary solution. Thanks in advance.

Since the menu belongs to the application, I suspect that there's nothing you can do with the installation to not display it. You need to ask the vendor how to remove it or if it's even possible to do so. I'd imagine it's extremely unlikely to be possible, unless they are prepared to build a version specific to your requirements. It may be simpler to add the vendor's update page(s) to the list of blocked pages which your web-facing firewalls use?

If you can disable the dialog box after the first run so that it wont run again for the subsequant executations then I would install the app, take a snapshot, run the app and disable the registration dialog, take snapshot. In that snap will be the required registry keys / file updates to turn of the registration page, at a guess.
Usual terms and conditions apply!

Hi Shetty,
As far as I know, 'Product Registration' windows generally appear not due to the .msi but due to the application functionality like some .dll or .exe files.

- Closer look at registries: I suggest you take a post install capture as suggested by Paul.
It may give you some registry that is modified after you click on the 'Product Registration' window, for e.g. something like 'Register Now' or 'Register Later', etc. if it just modifies the registry value then modify the same in your .mst or .msi.
- The other option would be when you dont see any changes in the registry(more likely) or .ini files.
Then I suggest you use use Filemon/ProcMon to check which file it queries when you get the 'Product Registration' window. I think you can try by removing this file from your application. I think i well scripted applications this is done my specific files such as .dlls

VBScab, I do get the point. In some applications it is may or may not possible to disable the menu options. So in the past I have rendered to remove the functionality of registration or updates by excluding the related files.
I agree that though the menu options are not removed the Updation and/or registration by Users can be removed even though the options seem to be enabled in the menubar.
I dont know if this would cater to Shetty's requirements but it worth an option to be tried. [:(]

ORIGINAL: shetty_86WHY? The application's menus are clearly under the control of the vendor. If they provide a means of disabling/removing menu items, they'll be able to help you. If they don't, you're stuck with it and need to look at a different solution, e.g. adding their download/update page(s) to your firewall's black-list. Didn't I say this already?
Hi Rajit,
I tried using Filemon, Regmon and PictureTaker.
