Scripting Question

SYSWOW64 version of MSIEXEC after imaging Dell 5290 2 in 1 stopping installs

01/07/2020 404 views

A lot of my scripted install apps are failing when I image a Dell 5290 2-in-1 because an instance of MSIEXEC.EXE is running in the background.  The MSIEXC.exe is from the SysWOW64 folder on my Windows 10 x64 build 1709 installs.  This does not appear to be an issue with the other laptops and desktop systems that I am imaging with the K2000.

The installs are failing because they see the running process as another install in progress.  I have tried to leave this running for an hour but it never seems to finish.  Even when I reboot, it is still there.  In taskmanager it shows as:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\msi.exe -Embedding (some long random string) E GLOBAL\MSI0000

Funny thing is if I kill this task with Taskmanager, it goes away and does not come back.  Has anyone else seen this or know what could be causing this to fire up?

The "Embedding" means that it's running a Custom Action.

Re-run your installation but add the logging argument:

/l*v c:\temp\whatever.log

Without a log, you have no chance of determining what's happening.

  • The logs for the installs that fail just tell me that another installation is in process. None of my deployments call the SysWOW64\Msiexec.exe so not sure why that is firing up.

MSI.EXE might be malware.  MSIEXEC.EXE is what is used to install MSI files.

  • This is occuring during the K2000 image deployment and only seems to be happening for the 5290 2-in-1 units. Just tried a couple of VMs and it does not appear to be an issue.
